Student work: Robert Bragg

Our BTEC National Art and Design and A Level Graphic student Robert Bragg spent 2012 creating a drawing a day! It's an amazing collection of work and to celebrate completing he's exhibiting his work at Mine Gallery in Carshalton. The exhibition is open from 19th January - 26th January, you can find out more information, HERE. College Mission Statement!

We loved returning to the second half of the Autumn term this week to see our college mission statement displayed on the wall in the main entrance - the best part about it is that it was designed by our very own Jessica Townsend (teacher of A Level Graphics, Photography and BTEC National Art and Design). We think it's brilliant to have such a motivating statement on the wall and love that it also happens to be a beautiful piece of graphic design. The Visual Arts team are very proud this week!

Well we're a little behind on this post but as it's coming up to the end of the year we're remembering all those odds and ends, like photographing our AS Graphics wonderful packaging outcomes! The designs were created as part of a retail graphics project, which involved designing a logo, packaging and swing tag for a retail outlet of their own choice. You can see all the designs on FLICKR

competition: graduate fashion week

Graduate Fashion Week is an annual event which showcases the best upcoming fashion designers graduating from degree course from across the country - normally it's just a chance for graduates to showcase their talent but this year they've got an open call looking for talent of any age! 

They are currently looking for writers and photographers to contribute and work with them in the run up to and during Graduate Fashion week + they're looking for illustration submissions to be used across social media networks!  so if you want to get involved get in touch - you can see all the details HERE.

Student Work: BTEC Animated Gifs

Some more fantastic animation work by our BTEC National Art and Design students! The students had to come up with a way of visually representing different subject areas within the college through a self portrait animated gif. How gorgeous is this video? It was created by the talented Nicole Licht, an in house designer for Etsy. If you're making paper art work this is a much watch - look at the incredible intricacy of the pieces cut out!

Inspiration: Doggy Packaging

Look at this fabulous packaging for Dog Shampoos Designed by Martha Robertson and Alfonso Sotelo found via The Dieline. 

"During a workshop of the master of packaging at ELISAVA (Barcelona), we have to design the graphic for a standard line of dog hair care. We start thinking how people wash their dogs, were they wash them, who wash them, when they wash them, etc.  We assume that washing the dog is always an adventure. When you try to wash them they run away, or they splash you, or when you finish washing them they run to the mud, or they bite you. So we want to make it easier and funny. In the pack we want to transmit quality, simplicity, fun, and ludic.  We emphasize the context of game and wonder putting a dog interacting or playing with the logo." - Martha Robertson and Alfonso Sotelo

Inspiration: Stefan Asafti

I love the work of Stefan Asafti, especially his project 'The Greatest Brandversations'. The project creates visual 'conversations' between rival brands using company logos and looking at the ways that they influence each other. Asafti states "I have switched the slogans of the brands amongst themselves, the goal of this being to give them further meaning and to create a soft of confusion. It is surprising how logos can influence other logos. The truth is that each pair of rivals has something in common, that something which has helped them to build one identity upon the other, this way becoming the biggest brands." I love the finished posters especially the combinations of old and new and the detail - the placement and colouring of each part has been done to perfection!

Pearlfisher are an independent design company who create fantastic logo and packaging design for companies. They also pride themselves in only working with ethical companies, you can read about their approach to design in full here. I particularly like the packaging and logos they've made for Innocent, Jamie Oliver and Wildwood.

My friend Mithi Shafiq creates wonderful illustrations! Mithi has an interesting background, as well as being an illustrator she is also a Dr. with a PHD in Science; you can see the influence this has had on some bodies of work particuarly her 'Uncle Albert Series' and 'Molecular Font'. I particular love the way in which she combines handmade and digital processes - like in the piece above that was created as part of a cover design competition for Anorak - The Happy Mag for Kids. The images above are featured on her website and they give you great insight into how she creates her pieces, you can also see more of see what goes on behind the scenes with her work over on her blog. 

Stephen Fry:Planet Word

This weeks episode of Stephen Fry's documentary Planet Word looked at the history of writing and the development of the alphabet - perhaps it would make a good background clip to watch/listen to whilst working on your typography outcomes! You can catch up with it on BBCiPlayer (12 days left to view!)

Inspiration:Dave Bain

Dave Bain is a Bristol based illustrator who works in a variety of ways from painting to mixed media techniques with digital software. The way he combines handmade techniques with digital is incredible and illustrated well with the piece above 'Love' where two hand drawn birds sit up a beautifully drawn digitally enhanced heart. To get an idea of the way in which he works you can watch motion stop videos of him drawing 'live' onto walls and gallery spaces!

Inspiration:Molly Askey Goldsbury

Illustrator Molly Askey Goldsbury has a wonderful style, particularly when it comes to combinations of collage and drawing. These handmade collage colour wheels from her 'Space Race' illustrations are fantastic, especially when they're incorporated alongside her drawings. You can see the way she develops this in her sketchbook pages experimenting with different papers and materials.

Rose Anderson is a Bristol based artist who started out as an illustrator and has gradually drifted to painting. Her work takes inspiration from natural history, entomology, anatomy and strange creatures. Her drawings give you a peak into sketchbook like pages, they are simply beautiful.
